What is the definition of classical art?

While there are many styles of art, including Contemporary, Abstract and Post-Impressionist, the term classical art refers to works of art dating from the Greco-Roman period up to the 18th century AD. In other words, Classical Art encompasses the major artistic periods in Western culture, including Greek and Roman sculpture and painting as well as Renaissance painting. To determine if something is classical art or not, you should focus on how it was created rather than on its specific style or subject matter.

Defining Classical Art

It’s not always easy to define what makes something classical, but one thing you can do is look at its history.
The works that came out of ancient Greece and Rome—including sculptures, paintings and architecture—are considered classical works. However, throughout time there has been some disagreement about which artists are counted among those ranks. In many cases, style was a defining factor; for example, although Michelangelo’s David could be seen as a breakthrough in realism and emotional detail by today’s standards, his style was considered classical during his lifetime because it looked back to classical Roman sculpture. In a nutshell, classical art is made up of sculptures and paintings that are mainly focused on depicting realistic images. It’s also known as formalism.

Hilly countryside of Tushia, fields, forests, and full-flowing rivers of the Moscow region perfectly connected in two medieval towns of the Chiminsky mountains, was once inhabited by the Etruscans, Romans, Goths, Longobards, Franks, and Normans.

Ercole Ercoli lives and works in Vallerano, where he was born. Sergey Dronov lives and works in Vinanello, where he moved from Moscow. Only a few miles of picturesque lands are separated from each other. As pleasing to the eye are olive groves, vineyards, chestnut, and walnut trees, which carry the life juices and richness of this unique land.

Colleagues-painters met in this wonderful province, between Rome and Viterbo, whose unique landscape emphasizes the beauty and rigor of historical and architectural monuments; palaces and gardens. The artists are fond of nature surrounding them: copses, groves, forests, lakes, springs, and rivers of this generous land inhabited by proud and hardworking inhabitants. Thanks to the cultural association “L’Albatros,” the acquaintance of the two artists began with participation in such important exhibitions as “Leo Tolstoy,” “European Union,” “Under the Sky of Italy,” “Divine Comedy of Dante,” as well as in other Roman exhibitions that were held in the library “Vallechileano” and the Russian Center for Science and Culture.

They confront each other with the themes of depicting reality, feelings, and poetry, but respecting the cultural substratum of each, without infecting each other with their creative influence.

Awareness of the quality of this substrate is expressed in an increased appreciation of the pictorial language and visual content.

If E. Ercoli immerses in her work in plant forms, both in still lives and in the landscapes of her Native Land, which received inspiration from the style of neo-impressionism, S. Dronov builds relations between his academic formation in Moscow, his homeland, and classical insights dissolved in modern post-surrealism.

Between these two artists, there was a kind of creative dialogue, which is not a competition, but a kind of stimulus in the desire to do something better within the framework of their commonwealth. Moreover, the results are obvious.

Today, these two artists, born in contexts and cultures so remote from each other, claim to be known and appreciated by the wider public not only in Europe, but also throughout the world. Wondering about the painting on my new unfinished canvas of the ocean view, I think to myself what will this mean? Of course many painters would say you must paint what you know will happen at the end. But do I? No, for I’m ever planning anything. Planning may be incomprehensible or impossible to me–especially for anything creative. What shape am I trying to build? Too many thoughts come together and scatter quickly, so how can it all make sense if I need order? It has not yet shown itself here before my eyes–however waiting is not always easy nor very rewarding.
Many months have passed since coming here–nothing meaningful or inspiring has happened with no success. Yet there still remains something…

This is a very complex process that requires a lot of motional and mental stress, pressure or tension exerted physically and mentally, as well as the costs of physical strength. It’s best to just let creativity happen naturally rather than force it from the beginning.

Do you think the audience need to explain the meaning of a painting?

One of my favorite movie directors David Lynch, in every possible way avoids interpreting his works, says that art cannot be told in words. I agree with him. For the most part, creativity cannot be expressed in words. This is at the level of feelings and perception. This already depends on the spirituality of the viewer, as far as they are ready to perceive what he has seen.

Can you lose interest in creativity?

Your family and friends are in no way connected with art, as you are to did they come to this? How do they now relate to what you are doing?

I think I was born with the need to create. Since childhood I’ve loved the phenomena of the physical world collectively,

including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features of this world.

Nature and animals remained alone with itself and with its world. Routine and monotony always depressed me.

At the age of 26, I have decided to seriously tackle creativity.

At age 27 I entered the Art and Graphic Department in State University studying painting and graphic design.

The first years of my life were very much supported by my mother. When I wrote with watercolor, she brought me flowers,

beautiful glass, and ceramic vessels. Such moments are very valuable and will always be remembered forever.

Memories like these cause a a feeling of joy to the quality of being thankful.

 My Dad was always proud of me. My  Brother supports and believes in me, and for my sister, she believes that there is nothing more beautiful than my paintings.

Of course, my husband Viktor Weyss played a big role. We met for the first time during my senior year in college.

At that time he had been an accomplished artist, with great experience not only in painting, but also

in graphics, sculpting, and temple painting. After graduation, he became my mentor and like-minded person.

My daughter Margarita was a perfect example.

They all, in fact, were all involved and play a major role in my artwork.

Which artist can you call your teachers?

In fact, for me, all artists are teachers. Starting with artists that made cave rock art and ending with the living now.

Of course, these are poets, writers, composers and directors.

What do you do besides creative work?

I teach fine arts to children at an art school.

Since I am a family woman, I cook. But from this, I come up with many creative ideas.

Leaving canvases untouched for later use adds an element of mystery and intrigue about what he will paint next. A collector once said that one could feel excitement when they entered into his studio because there was always something new to see.

Ercole spends most of his time in the studio, but leaves some unfinished work for him to continue tomorrow. Visitors come from all over to see him and buy what he has made. He has been known to produce an assortment of fine artwork that is valued by many people.

Biography

Julia Weyss — is an artist who has recently become engaged in creativity.

She is still in search of style, manners, and technique, gradually coming to understand what she wants to express in her art.

At the moment, she chooses oil painting that which she is most familiar with.  In the graphics she applies a watercolor technique as an experimental material.

For an artist, the main thing is an idea. A thought and a feeling.

Julia is looking for a form that does not hold the thought in the grip, which would help to force the viewer to experience the excitement and emotion, impressed by what they saw.

Julia believes every person’s  vision of the world forms during childhood.  From interrelation, communication with nature, a mother’s love, and conversations with their father.

All of these moments are episodes of childhood that stretch throughout our entire life until death.

The fact that we look, listen, read, and absorb into ourselves intuitively comes out & expressed through creativity.

Julia helps in the work of music and poetry.  Her paintings in the most part cause sadness, a state of rest, and a desire to enter the painting.

Her work is spiritual, sensual and philosophical.

It is amazing to see what can delight, surprise, or make one laugh or cry; effect the soul.

Mirror

The work was inspired under impression of music by Johann Sebastian Bach.

A sense of flying, voyage, experiencing the desire to bring the soul into the higher, spiritual world.

The search for spiritual beginning, the absence of the earthly is why the scene behind the main subject, which is a temple in the background.

The temple is what we have deep inside extending far down from the top of our spiritual impulses.

Feelings of the quality of being thankful, a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction, and looking back at something.

Understanding that everything that we live for is tolerant, forgiving, and having the desire to go there.

In our life, we strive for perfection.

The central figure is the result, maturity, a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint, and the state of taking pleasure from something in the present.

Silence

The painting was painted after her father’s death, and is devoted to Julia’s father.

He is a man in a bird, spiritual significance, a totem.

A man sits enjoying the sunset, thinking about life – gone by in time and no longer existing in the present, or likely to happen in the future.

There, beyond the horizon is the sea, which the earth’s surface and the sky appear to meet, unexplored, extending far down from the top or surface, wanting to experience a spacious, different life.

Here is a calm and complete absence of sound, to the further side of the horizon is something that is difficult or impossible to understand or explain.

“I would like to sail to the sea and not return”, – at the time when he was still in good health, these words seemed not able to be understood.

Even disturbing the state of being awake and aware of surroundings.

Only now we clearly realize that this would be a conception of what is a perfect death for him.

Apple orchard

When relatives leave, there is something remembered from the past. A recollection.

It can be anything.  An instrument which he worked with, shoes in which he walked, a small, smooth stone which lay in his pocket or a garden where he planted.

Everything is filled with love. An intense feeling of deep affection which the soul thrives on.

Memory breathes, remaining for many years. Causing sadness, a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, a feeling of worry and appeasement.

It remains for us. Recent work is linked by a chain of events and Reflection. The picture “Apple Garden” summed up the line.

For Julia Weyss  a main road is not a suggestion. It is an idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in her mind.

Carrying a thought of an imagined event or situation is what drives her to expressing a desire with her paintings.

Artist Viktor Weyss lived in Central Asia half his life. His work is a symbiosis of Eastern and European culture.

His work can be defined as decorative realism. He is not limited to paint only still life and landscapes.

His work is important to him not only by the form, but also in it’s content.

The graphic works – monotype, differ in their color complexity and unusual techniques of the composition.

The artist is not inclined to work with nature, because as he believes it limits his creative freedom.

Viktor in general begins in abstract to allow him self to be more free in the color to solution of composition.

But abstraction, as such, is not what interests him. He uses it as a means to solve the conceived plot of the picture, i.е. from chaos to a specific idea.  Stable decorative style in his paintings and aestheticism in graphics, socio-cultural hedonism and a kind of self-sufficiency, is a desire for symbolism and myth-making distinguishes his works.

Monumental art – majolica panel, painting the temple, the manufacture of reliefs on the facade of the temple gave impetus to the artist to spiritual and professional growth.

There is such an expression in the Christian religion as “From God and from Crafty “, i.e. Good and evil, which is for all our lives. To

Youth, one expresses calm. The other is tense and ready for action any moment. Our life on earth is an opportunity for free Choice:

“Guided” Painting

From time immemorial, mankind dreamed of being free. But in my opinion,

to the question “what does it mean to be free?”, not everyone can answer.  In life, we depend on many factors – from society, religion,

and money, eventually. We often observe how one person appears or a group of people with their own, even delirious idea.

Nevertheless, they follow him (they think) into a bright future.

Ancient Art

The Ancient Artwork balances all off of each other. Showing different times of the past. They all connect together throughout history. There is no doubt that the lost in the vastness of time, the artist Sergey Dronov shows with genuine interest for humanity in many ways, as the Greco-Roman era.

In this, lies the essence of the artistic methods S. Dronov and the context of the transformation of the symbolic direction of primary sources. An example of such a transformation – a well-known story of pious widows – Judith’s beauty. Famous for sophisticated deceit in the name of the noble principles and the severed head of the Assyrian general Holofernes, became one of the symbols of the defeated textbook Evil. Unfathomable, mystery Judith transmitted from century to century poets, painters and sculptors shocking to this day, each in its own way deals with the eternal relevance of the Old Testament story.

Throughout his career, he has been awarded for the Prize 3 exhibition VI Russian contest “Russian Artists – for clean water.”, the XII inter-regional professional competition “Biennale-2015.”, and was awarded the Gold and Silver Medal of Creative Union of Russian Artists.

Some of his exhibitions, are All-Union Exhibition of works of young artists “Youth country “, (Moscow, Manege).

His artwork expresses a different sort of message throughout his artwork unlike anyone else.  Though every little stroke to every finishing touch, he shows intricate beauty and love. His work shows a message of humanity. His pieces of art all have a symbolical of humanism in it by showing beauty of the body in different and unique ways.

Many of his paintings are property of the Russian Painters Union, of the Moscow Painters Union, of the “Muscovite Canvas” Gallery, of “La Prima” , of the “Scoglio di Quarto”, “Spazio Immagine” and “Segreto di Bocca” of Milan, as also, of various private collections in Russia, France, USA, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Canada, Holland and Belgium.

ABOUT SERGEY DRONOV

Sergey was born in 1957 and attended the Moscow Academy of Fine Arts from 1978 to 1983.

In the eighties he began working as a professional painter and artist and participated in collective exhibitions of … national importance. He continued working in his own laboratory while exposing paintings in personal and in collective shows such as in the Moscow galleries “Kusnezkiy Most”, “Galleria 91”, “Maneggio”, “Galleria Arbat” and the “Snutti Gallery” of Paris.

Since 2000, Sergey created oil and acrylic paintings and graphic art, thus participating in the art exhibition-trade at Milan, the “International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair MIART 2000” and in the theme gathering “Art Thoughts” in the “Scoglio di Quarto” Gallery of Milan and in other shows in the galleries and in the exposition centers of Milan, Turin, Arezzo and Rome.
