Watercolor Painting for Beginners

After all, there are endless colors to choose from and choosing can be overwhelming. That’s why we recommend starting out with simple colors—like blues and yellows—that will look great in any room. Also, keep your paintings simple: The idea is to practice using watercolors rather than trying to create a masterpiece on your first try. So don’t worry about attempting a complex painting; instead opt for something simple like a still life or portrait, which will allow you time to get used to working with watercolors without having to stress too much about making it perfect right away.

What to buy when starting out

The only basic tool you need to paint with watercolors is a brush. However, if you want to ensure clean lines when painting and make sure your paint mixes well, having a set of palette knives can be very helpful. For beginners, it’s probably best to stick with synthetic brushes; they’re less expensive than their natural counterparts and easier to handle. More importantly, they’re also washable—ideal for conserving your colors and keeping them usable for as long as possible.

How many brushes do you need?

When beginning to paint with watercolors, most students purchase a set containing an assortment of brushes. And while it’s true that all watercolor artists eventually need every type of brush in their kit, there are two basic brushes you’ll use for 90% or more of your work. The first is a round-tipped brush, which is used for detail and to blend colors together. The second is a larger flat brush that can be used for broader strokes and filling in shapes. If you opt for a starter set with many different types of brushes (and these kits often contain high-quality items), you may want to include those as well.

Tips for mixing paints

Instead of purchasing premixed sets of watercolors, it’s a good idea to mix your own custom color palette. To create your palette, choose one yellow, one red and one blue paint. Then you can use any combination of those three colors to mix any shade you want. Because primary colors work well together in a mixing bowl—even when they are used individually—watercolors are easier to mix than other forms of art like oil painting or acrylic painting.

What is watercolor paper?

When you’re working with watercolors, you need something to paint on that can handle getting wet. Typically, watercolor paper (also known as hot-pressed paper) is your best bet for strong color retention. In fact, some varieties of paper can hold up in water for hours without smudging or blurring! While not all watercolor papers are equal, what matters most is how well it works with your chosen type of paint. As a general rule, try to match up paints and papers from manufacturers that have been around awhile so you know they’ve perfected their craft.

How do I set up my palette?

The colors you’ll use for your watercolors should be very pigmented and vibrant, so when setting up your palette, it’s a good idea to have relatively light colors on one side. You don’t want any colors that are overly dark or that have too much transparency. On another side of your palette, place some fairly light colors and some mid-tone colors. This will allow you to achieve both light and dark values with ease while also providing an assortment of reds, yellows, oranges, greens and blues. Don’t forget to add in your neutrals as well!

What is the definition of classical art?

While there are many styles of art, including Contemporary, Abstract and Post-Impressionist, the term classical art refers to works of art dating from the Greco-Roman period up to the 18th century AD. In other words, Classical Art encompasses the major artistic periods in Western culture, including Greek and Roman sculpture and painting as well as Renaissance painting. To determine if something is classical art or not, you should focus on how it was created rather than on its specific style or subject matter.

Defining Classical Art

It’s not always easy to define what makes something classical, but one thing you can do is look at its history.
The works that came out of ancient Greece and Rome—including sculptures, paintings and architecture—are considered classical works. However, throughout time there has been some disagreement about which artists are counted among those ranks. In many cases, style was a defining factor; for example, although Michelangelo’s David could be seen as a breakthrough in realism and emotional detail by today’s standards, his style was considered classical during his lifetime because it looked back to classical Roman sculpture. In a nutshell, classical art is made up of sculptures and paintings that are mainly focused on depicting realistic images. It’s also known as formalism.

Ancient Greek Sculpture

The history of ancient Greek sculpture is divided into three periods: Archaic (c. 650–480 BC), Classic (c. 480–323 BC), and Hellenistic (323–31 BC). The Archaic period is generally considered to have lasted from approximately 650 to 485 BC, when [proto-]Doric architecture was developed and there was increasing prosperity in Greece.

Renaissance Sculpture

In contrast to classical sculpture, figures in Renaissance sculptures are presented in realistic and nuanced poses. With a greater focus on capturing movement and action than simply representing their subjects, early Renaissance artists made use of newly-developed technologies like bronze casting (which allowed for a greater degree of refinement) and linear perspective (which gave figures more dimensionality). As well, most Renaissance sculptors sought to capture human emotions in their work, as shown by Michelangelo’s David—an iconic sculpture that captures both vigor and grace. By combining these elements with newfound attention to light sources, early Renaissance sculptors were able to begin ushering in an era of expressionism while still using classical techniques.

Classical paintings

People often confuse classical with something that references Ancient Greece or Rome, but Classical art actually has a broader meaning. In general, it refers to anything made before about World War I, but there are several important movements within that timeframe worth noting as well. Some of them had very different ideas than artists today about what constitutes good art; for example, some classicists hated abstraction and even went so far as to destroy paintings they thought were too abstract (more on these conflicts in a bit). Before we talk about specific classicist movements, let’s first take a look at what defines classical works of all types.

Q: Do you distinguish between an artist and a person?

A: Yes and no. When you look at the artist’s works in his absence, there is a certain opinion about his work. If it is interesting and exciting, then you create an image of the author involuntarily in your consciousness, akin to his creativity. But, if you see an arrogant and in many respects, a negative person, you begin to believe that creativity can be insincere. Therefore, you have to evaluate his work separately from the author.

Q: Do you do anything other than painting? How did this activity affect your work?

Yes, I am engaged in graphics, sculpture, large-scale painting, and majolica. Sometimes it is useful to leave painting for a short time and, let’s say, do a relief or a monotype. There are times when you need to pause to comprehend what you are writing, whether you are standing still. This pause can give impetus to new solutions and new plastic.

Q: Has the country in which you lived left a trace in your work?

Oh sure. After all, I by nature as a European also lived in the east country and, unlike native inhabitants, I saw the east as. My work is a synthesis of two worlds. It’s like mixing the blood of the Eastern and the European, and in this case, beautiful children turn out.

Q: What do you write more? Still-life, landscapes or plot pictures?

I am interested in everything. After all, when you write some still lifes, you will get fatigued, so I want to take up the plot or landscape, as one complements the other.

Q: Do you have favorite themes for genre paintings?

Unfortunately, no. I want to write different topics to light up a new story, color, composition. There are artists who all their lives write pictures on the same topic, say, rural, and live it, and do not get tired, because it is given to them from above, and I welcome it.

Q: What do you think? Will beauty save the world?

It seems to me that he is too rational and material, and he is least interested in beauty. Although I think, a certain part, I hope, can save a certain amount.

Q: What does creativity give you in life?

A life!

Q: What do you expect from your viewer?

Understand my creativity, do not flatter.

Q: How do you see the world as an artist?

“Does my work not speak for itself?” I see a world saved by beauty.

Q: Can the creativity of the artist change the consciousness of a person?

Yes, maybe it’s for creativity. I think its main task is to change the consciousness of a person, to see the world through the eyes of an artist. If he is talented, then he can influence the mind of the viewer.

Q: What would you say to your child about becoming an artist?

I would say that this is a very difficult path, but it is very interesting.

Q: Do you feel excitement at the opening of your exhibition?

Of course. Always, like the first time. Just like an actor, going on stage. After all, personal exhibitions do not happen every week or every month. It takes time to prepare and, therefore, you get to have some certain experiences. After all, you do not know how the viewer will react to new works.

Q: What is the reason for your creativity?

Creativity is a necessity, if you want, dependence. And the occasion gives life itself and its influence on creativity.

Q: Who is a real artist?

This is someone who knows how to touch the most secret strings of a person’s soul, make him think, experience, breathe the air of a picture, enter it and dissolve into it.

Hilly countryside of Tushia, fields, forests, and full-flowing rivers of the Moscow region perfectly connected in two medieval towns of the Chiminsky mountains, was once inhabited by the Etruscans, Romans, Goths, Longobards, Franks, and Normans.

Ercole Ercoli lives and works in Vallerano, where he was born. Sergey Dronov lives and works in Vinanello, where he moved from Moscow. Only a few miles of picturesque lands are separated from each other. As pleasing to the eye are olive groves, vineyards, chestnut, and walnut trees, which carry the life juices and richness of this unique land.

Colleagues-painters met in this wonderful province, between Rome and Viterbo, whose unique landscape emphasizes the beauty and rigor of historical and architectural monuments; palaces and gardens. The artists are fond of nature surrounding them: copses, groves, forests, lakes, springs, and rivers of this generous land inhabited by proud and hardworking inhabitants. Thanks to the cultural association “L’Albatros,” the acquaintance of the two artists began with participation in such important exhibitions as “Leo Tolstoy,” “European Union,” “Under the Sky of Italy,” “Divine Comedy of Dante,” as well as in other Roman exhibitions that were held in the library “Vallechileano” and the Russian Center for Science and Culture.

They confront each other with the themes of depicting reality, feelings, and poetry, but respecting the cultural substratum of each, without infecting each other with their creative influence.

Awareness of the quality of this substrate is expressed in an increased appreciation of the pictorial language and visual content.

If E. Ercoli immerses in her work in plant forms, both in still lives and in the landscapes of her Native Land, which received inspiration from the style of neo-impressionism, S. Dronov builds relations between his academic formation in Moscow, his homeland, and classical insights dissolved in modern post-surrealism.

Between these two artists, there was a kind of creative dialogue, which is not a competition, but a kind of stimulus in the desire to do something better within the framework of their commonwealth. Moreover, the results are obvious.

Today, these two artists, born in contexts and cultures so remote from each other, claim to be known and appreciated by the wider public not only in Europe, but also throughout the world. The cultural association “L’Albatros” strives to accompany and support these artists on the path of their creative growth and to provide them with all possible assistance in preparing for their personal exhibitions in Italy, Russia, and the United States of America.

Wondering about the painting on my new unfinished canvas of the ocean view, I think to myself what will this mean? Of course many painters would say you must paint what you know will happen at the end. But do I? No, for I’m ever planning anything. Planning may be incomprehensible or impossible to me–especially for anything creative. What shape am I trying to build? Too many thoughts come together and scatter quickly, so how can it all make sense if I need order? It has not yet shown itself here before my eyes–however waiting is not always easy nor very rewarding.
Many months have passed since coming here–nothing meaningful or inspiring has happened with no success. Yet there still remains something…

This is a very complex process that requires a lot of motional and mental stress, pressure or tension exerted physically and mentally, as well as the costs of physical strength. It’s best to just let creativity happen naturally rather than force it from the beginning.

Do you think the audience need to explain the meaning of a painting?

One of my favorite movie directors David Lynch, in every possible way avoids interpreting his works, says that art cannot be told in words. I agree with him. For the most part, creativity cannot be expressed in words. This is at the level of feelings and perception. This already depends on the spirituality of the viewer, as far as they are ready to perceive what he has seen.

Can you lose interest in creativity?

Your family and friends are in no way connected with art, as you are to did they come to this? How do they now relate to what you are doing?

I think I was born with the need to create. Since childhood I’ve loved the phenomena of the physical world collectively,

including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features of this world.

Nature and animals remained alone with itself and with its world. Routine and monotony always depressed me.

At the age of 26, I have decided to seriously tackle creativity.

At age 27 I entered the Art and Graphic Department in State University studying painting and graphic design.

The first years of my life were very much supported by my mother. When I wrote with watercolor, she brought me flowers,

beautiful glass, and ceramic vessels. Such moments are very valuable and will always be remembered forever.

Memories like these cause a a feeling of joy to the quality of being thankful.

 My Dad was always proud of me. My  Brother supports and believes in me, and for my sister, she believes that there is nothing more beautiful than my paintings.

Of course, my husband Viktor Weyss played a big role. We met for the first time during my senior year in college.

At that time he had been an accomplished artist, with great experience not only in painting, but also

in graphics, sculpting, and temple painting. After graduation, he became my mentor and like-minded person.

My daughter Margarita was a perfect example.

They all, in fact, were all involved and play a major role in my artwork.

Which artist can you call your teachers?

In fact, for me, all artists are teachers. Starting with artists that made cave rock art and ending with the living now.

Of course, these are poets, writers, composers and directors.

You can also learn a lot from children.

What do you do besides creative work?

I teach fine arts to children at an art school.

Since I am a family woman, I cook. But from this, I come up with many creative ideas.

I try the recipes of different cuisines of the world. I also come up with my own.

But of course, when you cook bread and mix it, several times you knead it and

bake, it’s akin to the creative process. When you take the bread out of oven,

it smells and crackles in your hands. That’s the real happiness.

Biography

Julia Weyss — is an artist who has recently become engaged in creativity.

She is still in search of style, manners, and technique, gradually coming to understand what she wants to express in her art.

At the moment, she chooses oil painting that which she is most familiar with.  In the graphics she applies a watercolor technique as an experimental material.

For an artist, the main thing is an idea. A thought and a feeling.

Julia is looking for a form that does not hold the thought in the grip, which would help to force the viewer to experience the excitement and emotion, impressed by what they saw.

Julia believes every person’s  vision of the world forms during childhood.  From interrelation, communication with nature, a mother’s love, and conversations with their father.

All of these moments are episodes of childhood that stretch throughout our entire life until death.

The fact that we look, listen, read, and absorb into ourselves intuitively comes out & expressed through creativity.

Julia helps in the work of music and poetry.  Her paintings in the most part cause sadness, a state of rest, and a desire to enter the painting.

Her work is spiritual, sensual and philosophical.

It is amazing to see what can delight, surprise, or make one laugh or cry; effect the soul.

Mirror

The work was inspired under impression of music by Johann Sebastian Bach.

A sense of flying, voyage, experiencing the desire to bring the soul into the higher, spiritual world.

The search for spiritual beginning, the absence of the earthly is why the scene behind the main subject, which is a temple in the background.

The temple is what we have deep inside extending far down from the top of our spiritual impulses.

Feelings of the quality of being thankful, a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction, and looking back at something.

Understanding that everything that we live for is tolerant, forgiving, and having the desire to go there.

In our life, we strive for perfection.

The central figure is the result, maturity, a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint, and the state of taking pleasure from something in the present.

Silence

The painting was painted after her father’s death, and is devoted to Julia’s father.

He is a man in a bird, spiritual significance, a totem.

A man sits enjoying the sunset, thinking about life – gone by in time and no longer existing in the present, or likely to happen in the future.

There, beyond the horizon is the sea, which the earth’s surface and the sky appear to meet, unexplored, extending far down from the top or surface, wanting to experience a spacious, different life.

Here is a calm and complete absence of sound, to the further side of the horizon is something that is difficult or impossible to understand or explain.

“I would like to sail to the sea and not return”, – at the time when he was still in good health, these words seemed not able to be understood.

Even disturbing the state of being awake and aware of surroundings.

Only now we clearly realize that this would be a conception of what is a perfect death for him.

Apple orchard

When relatives leave, there is something remembered from the past. A recollection.

It can be anything.  An instrument which he worked with, shoes in which he walked, a small, smooth stone which lay in his pocket or a garden where he planted.

Everything is filled with love. An intense feeling of deep affection which the soul thrives on.

Memory breathes, remaining for many years. Causing sadness, a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, a feeling of worry and appeasement.

It remains for us. Recent work is linked by a chain of events and Reflection. The picture “Apple Garden” summed up the line.

For Julia Weyss  a main road is not a suggestion. It is an idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in her mind.

Carrying a thought of an imagined event or situation is what drives her to expressing a desire with her paintings.
