Landscape painting can capture landscapes of mountains, valleys, bodies of water, fields, forests, and coasts in vibrant detail. It can also capture a beautiful moment and document natural events that others may never get to see in their lifetimes. The best landscape paintings are the ones that remind us of why we love the outdoors so much!

How do you define landscape painting?
A landscape painting is a depiction of an environment whether it be natural or artificial. The term is derived from late Latin words meaning land and to paint, with which landscape generally described much more than what we think of today as a landscape work. Over time, however, that definition has changed to embrace a broader meaning, including seascapes or cityscapes in addition to mountain ranges—any terrestrial or near-terrestrial scene that makes for captivating art or photography. Landscape painting has been practiced for centuries as a genre in Western art, but only became popular in North America during our own modern period—the mid-1800s through today.
What are some famous examples of landscape paintings throughout history?
Some famous examples of landscape paintings throughout history are The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, Water Lilies by Claude Monet and Two Girls Walking on a Beach at Sunset by Alfred Sisley. These three artists were highly influential in landscape painting history with their unique styles and techniques to depict landscapes. All three artists used simple elements to display landscapes including trees, oceans/water or fields; however there is always an element of natural beauty in each piece that makes them worthy of attention from viewers.
What is meant by painting the light?
The appearance of a landscape often changes with different times of day, from sunrise to sunset and even as night falls.
How have digital tools influenced landscape painting?
Given that we’re living in a digitally connected world with tools like social media being right at our fingertips, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that digital tools have influenced landscape painting. People all over the world are able to connect instantly with one another and share their work – so much so that many professional artists upload their creations on sites like Instagram to get instant feedback from people all over the world before they put brush to canvas.
Practice Landscape Painting
Landscapes are some of my favorite things to paint. I love making pictures that help viewers to slow down a bit and take in something beautiful or calm their busy mind for a few minutes.
When it comes to landscapes, there is truly no end to what you can paint — whether your interest is in capturing seascapes or landscapes of places near you that you’ve visited or from traveling abroad.
